Recipe: Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Rolls with Sausage Gravy "Frosting"

Ingredients:

For the Rolls:

  • - 1 pound (450g) breakfast sausage
  • - 6 large eggs
  • - Salt and pepper, to taste
  • - 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • - 1 package refrigerated crescent roll dough (8 count)

For the Sausage Gravy "Frosting":

  • - 1/2 pound (225g) breakfast sausage
  • - 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • - 2 cups whole milk
  • - Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven and prepare the ingredients:

   - Preheat the oven to the temperature recommended on the crescent roll dough package.

   - Cook the breakfast sausage for the rolls in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it into crumbles. Once cooked, set it aside.

   - In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and season with salt and pepper. Cook the scrambled eggs in the same skillet used for the sausage until they are just set. Remove from heat and set aside.

   - Shred the cheddar cheese and set it aside.

2. Assemble the rolls:

   - Unroll the crescent roll dough and separate it into individual triangles.

   - Sprinkle a small amount of shredded cheddar cheese onto each triangle.

   - Add a spoonful of cooked breakfast sausage onto each triangle, followed by a spoonful of scrambled eggs.

   - Roll up each triangle, starting from the wide end, and place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

3. Bake the rolls:

   - Follow the baking instructions on the crescent roll dough package to determine the baking time and temperature.

   - Place the baking sheet with the rolls in the preheated oven and bake until the rolls are golden brown and cooked through.

4. Prepare the sausage gravy "frosting":

   - In a separate skillet, cook the remaining breakfast sausage over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Remove any excess grease from the skillet, leaving about 2 tablespoons.

   - Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir well to combine.

   - Slowly pour in the milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Continue cooking and stirring until the mixture thickens and reaches a gravy-like consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

5. Frost the rolls:

   - Once the rolls are baked and slightly cooled, generously spoon the prepared sausage gravy over the top of each roll, mimicking the appearance of frosting.

6. Serve and enjoy:

   - Arrange the sausage, egg, and cheese rolls on a serving platter.

   - Serve them warm, allowing the savory sausage gravy to cascade down the sides of the rolls.

   - Enjoy these delightful breakfast rolls as a savory treat to kickstart your day.

Ditch the traditional cinnamon rolls and embark on a savory breakfast adventure with these sausage, egg, and cheese rolls topped with a tantalizing sausage gravy "frosting."

  5. For everyone wondering how the dough is. The pictures are actually from a lady on Facebook named missy Kent who had posted in a group of these cinnamon rolls she did. She made her own cinnamon roll dough. So the pictures with this post aren’t from this user they are from a different person who made them using her own dough mixture.
