🌿 The Jewel Weed & Plantain Salve Story

I’m thinking this is still technically “canning” — but dammit I’m proud of my jewel weed & plantain salve. I’m taking a little break in my seasonal food preservation canning to get going on my medicine cabinet canning. It is poison oak, sting, itch and general first aid salve.

From My Apothecary: "I harvested the jewel weed and plantain and processed the beeswax from a local beekeeper who gifted me hive leavings. Having spent several years studying wood betony and as a self-taught herbalist, I started making this salve last year and two 4-oz. jars lasted us until a few months ago. Now we cannot do without it." 🌿❤️

I have made five 4-oz. jars so far. I'll have to make more because this is absolutely the best stuff. I'm hyper allergic to poison oak and ivy. The hubs is terribly allergic to stings and the mosquitoes always eat him up. The kids are always needing it. This salve has been used in our home for everything from burns (including sunburns), bites, stings, poison oak, ivy and sumac, small abrasions, skin irritations and rashes and so much more. It never disappoints. Love me some jewel weed salve.

½ cupBeeswax pastilles (local, preferably)

👩‍🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions

1 Harvest and Prepare the Herbs

Harvest fresh jewel weed and plantain leaves from a clean, pesticide-free area. Chop them into small pieces to increase surface area for infusion. Jewel weed is best harvested when in bloom, and plantain can be harvested throughout the growing season.

💡 Pro Tip: Jewel weed is often found growing near poison oak — it's nature's remedy growing right alongside the irritant!

2 Infuse the Oil

Place the chopped herbs in a clean, dry glass jar. Cover completely with carrier oil (olive, jojoba, or sweet almond oil). The oil should be at least 1 inch above the herbs. Seal the jar and place it in a sunny windowsill for 4-6 weeks, shaking gently every day. Alternatively, you can use a slow cooker on the lowest setting for 4-6 hours.

⏱️ Patience is Key: The longer you infuse, the more potent your salve will be. The 4-6 week method yields the strongest, most effective salve.

3 Strain the Oil

After the infusion period, strain the oil through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean bowl. Squeeze the cheesecloth to extract as much oil as possible. Discard the spent herbs.

4 Melt the Beeswax

In a double boiler or a heat-safe bowl over simmering water, combine the strained herbal oil and beeswax. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the beeswax is completely melted. The ratio of oil to beeswax determines the firmness of the salve — use 4 parts oil to 1 part beeswax for a firm but spreadable salve.

💡 Pro Tip: For a softer salve, use more oil. For a firmer salve, use more beeswax. Adjust to your preference.

5 Add Optional Ingredients

If desired, add a few drops of vitamin E oil for preservation and essential oils (like lavender or tea tree) for added benefits and fragrance. Stir well.

6 Pour and Set

Carefully pour the hot salve into sterilized 4-oz jars. Allow the salve to cool completely at room temperature. It will harden as it cools. Once set, add lids and label your jars.

✨ Pro Tips for Perfect Jewel Weed Salve

  • Harvest sustainably: Never take more than one-third of a patch of jewel weed or plantain.
  • Use fresh herbs: Fresh herbs make the most potent salve. If you must use dried, reduce the amount by half.
  • Local beeswax: Local beeswax is pure and free of additives. It also has a beautiful natural scent.
  • Test for allergies: Before using on a large area, test a small amount on your inner arm.
  • Label clearly: Include the date and ingredients on your jar so you know what's inside.
  • Store properly: Keep in a cool, dark place to extend shelf life.
