Foraged Herbal First Aid Salve — nature's remedy for bites, sun, and rashes 🌿

"Foraged and dehydrated Plantain, All-heal, Yarrow, Calendula, and oils processed with beeswax and shea for salve. It works to soothe mosquito and spider bites, too much sun, and skin rashes after doing my gardening."

There's something deeply satisfying about walking into your backyard, identifying wild herbs, and transforming them into a healing salve that works as well as anything from the pharmacy. This foraged herbal first aid salve combines four powerful healing plants — plantain, yarrow, calendula, and all-heal — into a single jar of green goodness.

Whether you're dealing with mosquito bites, spider bites, sunburn, or post-gardening rashes, this salve has you covered. The herbs are dehydrated to preserve their medicinal properties, then infused into oil and combined with beeswax and shea butter for a smooth, spreadable, skin-loving balm.

🌿 Why forage your own herbs? Wildcrafted herbs are often more potent than store-bought, and foraging connects you to the land in a meaningful way. Plus, it's free!

🌿 Why Forage Your Own Herbs?

💰
Cost-Effective

These healing plants grow wild in most yards — free medicine right outside your door!

🌱
More Potent

Freshly foraged and properly dried herbs retain higher levels of active compounds than commercial dried herbs.

🤲
Connection to Nature

Foraging builds a relationship with the plants and the land — a deeply rewarding practice.

📚 The Four Healing Herbs in This Salve

🌿 Plantain (Plantago major/lanceolata)

Often called "nature's band-aid," plantain stops bleeding, reduces inflammation, draws out splinters, and soothes insect bites. It contains allantoin, which promotes skin cell regeneration.

🌸 Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Yarrow is a powerful wound healer that stops bleeding, fights infection, and reduces inflammation. It's been used for centuries on battlefields and is excellent for cuts and rashes.

🌼 Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

Calendula is anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and deeply skin-healing. It's especially good for sunburn, rashes, and dry, cracked skin.

💚 All-Heal (Prunella vulgaris / Self-heal)

Also known as self-heal, this herb lives up to its name. It has strong antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. It's particularly effective for skin irritations and insect bites.

📝 Foraged Herbal First Aid Salve Recipe

Yield: Approximately 8-12 oz of salve | Prep time: 30 minutes | Infusion time: 4-6 weeks (or quick method 2-3 hours)

🌿 "Foraged and dehydrated Plantain, All-heal, Yarrow, Calendula... processed with beeswax and shea for salve."

📦 Ingredients

  • Dried plantain leaves — 1 part
  • Dried all-heal (self-heal) leaves — 1 part
  • Dried yarrow leaves and flowers — 1 part
  • Dried calendula flowers — 1 part
  • Carrier oil (olive oil, jojoba, or sweet almond) — enough to cover herbs
  • Beeswax pastilles — approximately 1 oz per 4 oz infused oil (adjust for desired consistency)
  • Shea butter — 1-2 tablespoons (adds creaminess and extra moisture)
  • Vitamin E oil — a few drops (optional, natural preservative)
  • Essential oils (optional) — lavender or tea tree for added benefits

📝 Instructions

Step 1 – Forage and Dehydrate the Herbs

Harvest plantain, yarrow, all-heal, and calendula from clean, pesticide-free areas. Harvest in the morning after the dew has dried. Rinse gently and pat dry. Dehydrate at 95-105°F (35-40°C) until completely crisp, or air dry in a warm, dark place for 1-2 weeks.

Step 2 – Combine Herbs in Equal Parts

Mix equal parts dried plantain, all-heal, yarrow, and calendula. You'll need enough to fill a jar about ¾ full.

Step 3 – Infuse the Oil (Two Methods)

Slow method (4-6 weeks): Place the mixed herbs in a glass jar. Cover completely with carrier oil. Seal and place in a warm, dark place for 4-6 weeks, shaking gently every few days.

Quick method (2-3 hours): Place herbs and oil in a double boiler or slow cooker on the lowest setting for 2-3 hours (do not simmer). Strain through cheesecloth.

Step 4 – Strain the Infused Oil

Strain the infused oil through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean bowl or pot. Squeeze the herbs gently to extract all the oil. Discard the spent plant material.

Step 5 – Make the Salve

In a double boiler, combine the infused oil, beeswax, and shea butter. Heat gently until everything is melted and combined. Remove from heat. Add Vitamin E oil and any essential oils (lavender or tea tree are excellent choices). Stir well.

Step 6 – Pour and Set

Pour the warm mixture into small jars or tins. Let cool completely at room temperature until solid (about 2-4 hours). Do not refrigerate during this initial set.

Step 7 – Label and Store

Label your jars with the name "Foraged First Aid Salve" and the date. Store in a cool, dark place for up to 1 year.

First batch tip: This salve is incredibly versatile — keep a jar in your garden shed, first aid kit, and bathroom cabinet. It's perfect for post-gardening skin care!
