Recipe: DIY Laundry Detergent for Cleaner Clothes

Yields: 2.5 gallons

Ingredients:

  • - 1/2 bar of Fels Naptha soap
  • - 2 cups of water
  • - Hot water (to fill container halfway)
  • - 1/2 cup washing soda
  • - 1/4 cup borax
  • - Essential oil (optional, e.g., lavender, lemon, or citrus)

Instructions:

  • 1. Grate half a bar of Fels Naptha soap and melt it in 2 cups of water. You can use a          double boiler or simply heat it in a microwave-safe bowl.
  • 2. While the soap is melting, fill your 2.5-gallon container halfway with hot water.            The hot water helps dissolve the washing soda and borax more effectively.
  • 3. Add 1/2 cup of washing soda and 1/4 cup of borax to the container. Stir well to              ensure they dissolve completely.
  • 4. Once the soap is fully dissolved, add it to the container and mix thoroughly until all      the ingredients are combined.
  • 5. Top off the container with water until you reach a total volume of 2.5 gallons.                Ensure that all the ingredients are well incorporated.
  • 6. If desired, add a few drops of your preferred essential oil, such as lavender, lemon,        or citrus, to infuse a delightful fragrance into your laundry detergent.
  • 7. Allow the mixture to sit for 24 hours. During this time, it may start to gel up, which      is normal. Stir the mixture occasionally to maintain consistency.
  • 8. After 24 hours, give the laundry detergent a final thorough mix to ensure all the            ingredients are well distributed.

Usage:

  • When it's time to do laundry, add no more than a quarter cup of the homemade laundry detergent per load, adjusting the amount based on the size and dirtiness of the load. On average, approximately 1/16 cup is suitable for a regular load of clothes. For heavily soiled items like bedding or work clothes, you can use a bit more. To measure the detergent accurately, consider using a small measuring cup dedicated to this purpose.
