Recipe: Homemade Cranberry Juice

Ingredients:

  • - 4 cups fresh or frozen cranberries
  • - 4 cups water
  • - 1 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • - Optional: Lemon or orange zest for added flavor

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Cranberries:

   - Rinse the cranberries under cold water and remove any stems or blemished berries.

   - If desired, set aside a few cranberries for garnish.

2. Simmer the Cranberries:

   - In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the cranberries and water.

   - Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat.

   - Reduce the heat to low and let the cranberries simmer, uncovered, for about 15-20 minutes or until the cranberries have softened and burst.

3. Strain the Cranberries:

   - Once the cranberries have cooked down, remove the saucepan from the heat.

   - Set a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth-lined colander over a large bowl or pitcher.

   - Pour the cranberry mixture into the strainer, allowing the liquid to separate from the solids.

   - Use the back of a spoon or a spatula to press down on the cranberries, extracting as much juice as possible.

4. Sweeten and Flavor:

   - Return the strained cranberry juice to the saucepan.

   - Add sugar to the juice, starting with 1/2 cup and adjusting to your desired level of sweetness.

   - If desired, add a touch of lemon or orange zest to enhance the flavor.

5. Heat and Dissolve:

   - Place the saucepan back on the stove over low heat.

   - Stir the cranberry juice occasionally until the sugar has completely dissolved, ensuring a smooth and well-blended juice.

6. Chill and Serve:

   - Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the cranberry juice cool to room temperature.

   - Once cooled, transfer the juice to a pitcher or glass bottles and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours to chill thoroughly.

   - Before serving, give the juice a good stir to recombine any settled solids.

7. Garnish and Enjoy:

   - Pour the homemade cranberry juice into glasses, adding ice cubes if desired.

   - Garnish with a few reserved cranberries or a twist of lemon or orange zest.

   - Sip and savor the invigorating flavors of your homemade cranberry juice.
