Canning Dog Food Meat: A Healthy and Cost-Effective Solution

From Butcher to Jar: Canning Nutritious Dog Food at Home

As a pet owner, finding affordable and nutritious food for your furry friends is always a priority.

Recently, I had a fantastic experience at my local butcher where I scored an incredible deal on ground meat—40 pounds for just $10! This mixture, often referred to as "sawdust," includes various meats like cow, deer, ox, and sheep, making it a great source of protein for my dogs. However, with limited freezer space, I decided to can the meat instead. Here’s how I did it and why it’s a great option for pet owners.

Why Choose Canned Dog Food?

Canning dog food meat offers several benefits:

Preservation : Canning extends the shelf life of meat, making it easy to store without the need for a freezer.

Nutritional Value : Canned meat retains its nutrients, providing a healthy option for your pets.

Cost-Effective : Buying in bulk and canning your own dog food is often cheaper than purchasing commercial dog food.

Quality Control : You know exactly what ingredients are in your dog’s food, ensuring it’s healthy and free from unwanted additives.

How to Can Dog Food Meat

 Ingredients:

  • - 40 lbs of mixed ground meat (like cow, deer, ox, sheep, etc.)
  • - Water or beef broth (optional, for moisture)
  • - Salt (optional, consult your vet before adding)

Equipment:

  • - Pressure canner
  • - Canning jars with lids and bands
  • - Large pot for cooking the meat
  • - Jar lifter
  • - Clean towels

 Instructions:

1.  Prepare the Meat :

   - In a large pot, cook the ground meat over medium heat until it’s browned and fully cooked. If desired, you can add a little water or broth to keep it moist, but this is optional.

2. Sterilize the Jars :

   - While the meat is cooking, sterilize your canning jars and lids by placing them in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes or running them through a hot cycle in the dishwasher.

3. Fill the Jars :

   - Once the meat is cooked, carefully spoon it into the sterilized jars, leaving about 1 inch of headspace at the top. If you want, you can add a small amount of salt for flavor, but check with your vet first to ensure it’s appropriate for your dogs.

4. Seal the Jars :

   - Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean towel to ensure a good seal. Place the lids on top and screw on the bands until they are fingertip-tight.

5. Process the Jars :

   - Place the filled jars in a pressure canner following the manufacturer’s instructions. Process the jars at 10-15 psi for 75 minutes for pint jars and 90 minutes for quart jars.

6. Cool and Store :

   - Once the processing time is complete, turn off the heat and allow the canner to cool naturally. Carefully remove the jars and place them on a clean towel or rack to cool completely. Check that the lids have sealed properly by pressing down in the center of each lid—if it doesn’t pop back, it’s sealed!

7. Label and Store :

   - Once cooled, label the jars with the date and type of meat. Store them in a cool, dark place. Canned dog food can last for a year or more if stored properly.

Canning dog food meat is a fantastic way to provide your pets with wholesome, nutritious meals while saving money.

With the recent bounty from my butcher, I feel good knowing that I'm giving my dogs healthy food without breaking the bank. Plus, they’ll love the taste of freshly canned meat! If you're looking for an affordable and healthy option for your furry friends, consider trying your hand at canning dog food. It’s a rewarding experience that benefits both you and your pets!
